Classroom Procedures
- Entering the room: Enter quietly and politely; don't interrupt other students; sit at your desk, begin morning work if it is on your desk or read a book, follow the appropriate procedures for each time of day (e.g., morning, after lunch, after a special class).
- Lining up: Stand up quietly; push in your chair; take all necessary items; line up without touching others or talking; face the front of the line; watch where you are going.
- Leaving the room: Ask/Tell where you need to go do not run or play in the hallways or restrooms, set a good example for others around you. Do not take anything into the bathroom.
- Beginning the day: Enter the room politely; unpack and put away your backpack, lunch, and coat. Sharpen THREE pencils to take with you to each class. Sit at your desk and read alone or take AR test silently. Most of the time morning time will be for reading an AR book, AR tests and quick library trips.
- Ending the day/end of class block: Clean off your desk; turn in any finished work pick up any trash around desk; stack your chair; wait quietly to be dismissed.
- Taking out/putting away/caring for supplies: Share group supplies; recap markers and glue; make sure you put materials in your group basket; if something belongs to another group, return it to them quietly.
- Participating in group lessons: raise your hand to speak; do not speak when someone else is speaking.
- Getting help with assignments: Raise your hand to ask for help if you need it, or have a question. If you are working alone, raise your hand to get help from me; if you are working with a group, ask them for help first, or ask your center leader in understanding how you do the assignment.
- Handing in finished work/homework: I never want to hear "I'm finished" or "What do we do when we're done" When you complete your work you will look over it and check your work. Once you have checked it and have done your best work. You may complete unfinished work, read your AR book, Make sure your name, magic number, and the date is on your paper; place your paper upside down on your desk.
- What to do with unfinished work: If I ask for work to be turned in, let me know if it isn't finished; if I ask you to keep an unfinished task, put it in your ELA folder.
- When and how to use the school restroom: We have designated time to go to the restroom and to get water, you can keep a bottle of water at your desk so we do not have to use the water signal. If it is an emergency and I have a note from a parent give me the correct signal to use the bathroom, leave the room quietly; do not play in the restroom; return to class quietly.
- When and how to use the drinking fountain or sink: When we go to the restroom it is also your chance to get water take only a three-second sip; if you need to wash your hands, use only a little soap; wipe up any water you spill. You are allowed to have water at your desk. Only water!
- When and how to use the pencil sharpener: At the beginning of each day you will sharpen two or three pencils for the day if your pencil breaks during an assignment, you will trade and use a community pencil.
- Being a classroom helper: The person who is the line leader for the day will be my classroom helper. Do NOT ask can I pass out something I will ask when I need you. The second person in line is the door holder go to the back of the line after you hold the door.
- Getting into work groups: GROUPS Get Along, Respect others and their thoughts, On task all the time, Use quiet voices, Participate actively, Stay with your group. Take all the materials you will need; complete the task doing your personal best; make sure each person signs the project. Work together!
- Using the classroom library: When I am not teaching the whole group, you may ask to check out a book. To do so, select a book (you only have three minutes at the class library) and sign out the book on the sign-out sheet. Take good care of the book; when you are finished, return the book to the basket where for got it from and check it off the list. when at my classroom library you must put the book back in the basket that you got it from. All books and baskets have AR levels on them. If I see you not putting books back in the correct basket then that student will loose classroom library privileges.
- AR tests will only be taken in the mornings during homeroom 7:30-8:00, and during ELA centers. Don't ask to go to the library or take a test during any other time. Library usually opens at 7:45 so if need to go to the school library you will be allowed to go from 7:45-8:00 and during ELA centers.
- Handling seat work pages: As soon as you get a paper, print your first name, magic number and the date at the top on the right-hand side.
- Preparing for lunch: Wait quietly at your desk; when your you are called get your lunch or lunch money and line up; take everything with you, as you will not be allowed to come back to the classroom after we leave for lunch. I will call groups to lineup for lunch, you will get what you need for lunch get some hand sanitizer and line up quietly for lunch.
- Getting a tissue: You may not leave your seat for any reason except to get a tissue. Throw the used tissue away immediately; make sure it lands in the trash can; get right back to work. If you start to take advantage of the tissues I will get the tissues for you and you will stay seated.
- Throwing away trash: We will throw trash away at the end of an activity. Do not leave your seat during an activity to throw away trash. Do not play basketball with your trash; make sure all trash lands in the can; pick up trash even if it isn't yours.
- Turning in lost items: Ask the people around you if they lost the item you found. If the item doesn't belong to any one around you raise your hand and tell me. Give yourself a "pat on the back" for being honest.
- Locating lost items: Ask the people around you if they found the item you lost; if not, ask me at a time when I'm not teaching the class; if you find it, thank the person who turned it in; next time, try to take care of your things. When things get lost sometimes people will go straight to saying someone stole it. Stealing will not be tolerated and students will get written up if they are caught stealing. Don't bring anything to your desk that is not for school/learning. No jewelry, lip gloss, purses or toys of any kind. The first time I see a forbidden item I will take it away and give it back at the end of the day. If it happens again I will take it away and parents will need to come out to pick it up. Keep valuable supplies in your pencil pouch and keep it tucked in your desk. Do not go in any persons desk/cubby/backpack. Sometimes I will ask a student to look in an absent student's folder to get a paper that needs to be turned in. Bottom line don't touch other people's stuff.
- Pledge/Morning Announcements: When you hear/see the signal, stop what you're doing immediately and stand up; place your right hand over your heart; say the Pledge of Allegiance respectfully; quietly think about the things you want to learn today and how you will act in class, around the school and on the playground.
- Visitors in the classroom: When visitors enter the room, visitors are here to watch you learn, so be ready to explain what you are working on; treat visitors respectfully.
- Fire drill: Stop everything; stand up, line up and head for the door quickly, but without running or pushing; do not cover your ears; do not make any side trips; wait patiently, calmly, and quietly in line outside until we are allowed to go back to what we were doing. You are not allowed to talk during a fire drill, follow me to the designated spot outside after a couple fire drills our class will know where to stand so I may tell the line leader to lead us.
- Signals for attention: When I need your attention, I will give the signal as soon hear the signal, stop what you are doing, repeat the signal and listen for directions.
- Helping other students: In a cooperative classroom, it is good to help one another; if someone needs help with directions or reading an assignment, help him or her if you are able; if someone needs help with understanding the problem, tell him or her to ask me for help; never put down another student who asks for help.
- Organizing desk: Remove all loose papers; decide if they should go home or stay at school; put papers that should stay at school in the the correct folder, put materials in your pencil pouch; put your folders and notebooks on the left side of your desk tray; everything else goes on the right side; pick up your trash. Keep your desk neat and clean!!
- What to do during "free" time: If you finish an assignment and have checked over it, first work on any unfinished assignments when you finish those, read a AR book.
- Do NOT SHHHH classmates when classmates are talking shhhhing them adds to the noise and is NOT necessary.
- Making phone calls, a lot of students want to call home for something they forgot at home or they want to call to ask a question. Students need to take care of these things at home as much as possible. Students may call between 7:30-7:55 for forgotten items. All other phone calls will be made if someone is sick. Students will not be allowed to call home to ask about what type of transportation they need to take. Students will go home in their originally established method unless otherwise notified be a parent by phone, email or note.
- What to do when someone is bleeding or throws up. Bottom line don't try to clean up someone else's blood or vomit. Tell an adult and we will call the custodian to clean it up. WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TOUCH OR CLEAN UP SOMEONE ELSE'S BLOOD OR VOMIT. If you find something sharp around the school don't touch we will call a custodian to come and pick it up. DON'T TOUCH.
- Transportation: Any transportation changes require a written note. The note can either be handwritten or an email.
- Any prescription that your child must take during the school day must be accompanied by a medical form. This form must be completed by a doctor and signed by you. These forms are available at your doctor’s office. The medication must be sent in its original container and may only be brought to school by an adult.
- Toys, cards, radios, tape recorders, video games, cell phones, cameras, expensive watches, large sums of money, Heelies, etc. are not permitted in the school. If any of the above items are brought to school, the teacher will confiscate and the parent/guardian will need to pick the item up from the teacher. If a cell phone is confiscated, the school will follow the PCS Code of Conduct procedures. The school is not responsible for any of these items if they are brought to school.
